Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech big mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by other gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "At this time, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unbelievable music expertise across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with help for spatial audio - there isn't any higher solution to take pleasure in, uncover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 player that might hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music participant that lets you put your whole music collection in your pocket and take heed to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again."

Related MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony did not have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has launched 5 versions of its music player - the Traditional, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent times, with cell phone know-how enabling customers to hearken to music companies on their telephones.
