The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's govt workers Tuesday, was first reported by electric automobile information site Electrek.

"Anybody who wishes to do distant work must be within the workplace for a minimal (and I mean *minimal*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is lower than we ask of manufacturing unit staff," Musk wrote, including that the workplace must be the worker's primary office where the opposite staff they commonly work together with are based — "not a distant department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally assessment any request for exemption from the policy, but that for probably the most part, "For those who do not show up, we are going to assume you've got resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) did not reply to a request for comment on the policy change, but Musk appeared to substantiate it in a tweet of his personal early Wednesday when asked on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any extra remark to individuals who suppose coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They need to pretend to work someplace else."The coverage is totally at odds with that of the other tech firm Musk is attempting to purchase, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously introduced workers can proceed to work from home "ceaselessly" if they prefer. "Wherever you are feeling most productive and creative is the place you'll work and that features working from house full-time ceaselessly," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a note to Twitter's practically 100,000 staff in March, simply before Musk's interest in proudly owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, nonetheless, that will not be the case. It is particularly necessary that senior managers be seen in the workplace, Musk stated, adding that was one of many reasons he primarily lived at the Tesla manufacturing unit in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to extend production in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not completed that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are of course firms that do not require this, but when was the last time they shipped a terrific new product? It has been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and will create and really manufacture probably the most thrilling and meaningful products of any company on Earth," he added. "This won't occur by phoning it in."

Surveys present the vast majority of workplace employees prefer the choice to work at home. Since reopening offices following Covid-19 shutdowns, many companies past Twitter have introduced increased flexibility for employees who wish to work remotely, partly as a solution to retain or appeal to expertise in a particularly tight labor market. However the world's richest person does not seem concerned about that dynamic.
