Talking in the dugout of the Nice American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler stated, "I do not plan on coming out for the anthem going ahead till I really feel better in regards to the route of our country."

"I am not okay with the state of this nation. I wish I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I want that I might have demonstrated what I learned from my dad, that once you're dissatisfied together with your nation, you let it be known by means of protest. The house of the courageous ought to encourage this."
