Meta-Elemente geben eine Gesamtübersicht über den Thema einer Seite, gewiss stellte sich bald raus, dass die Verwendung dieser Details nicht ordentlich war, da die Wahl der benutzten Schlüsselworte dank dem Webmaster eine ungenaue Abbildung des Seiteninhalts widerspiegeln konnte. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in den Meta-Elementen vermochten so irrelevante Unterseiten bei besonderen Stöbern listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller unterschiedliche Punkte innert des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu manipulieren, dass die Seite besser in den Ergebnissen aufgeführt wird.[3] Da die neuzeitlichen Search Engines sehr auf Gesichtspunkte dependent waren, die allein in Koffern der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr instabil für Missbrauch und Manipulationen im Ranking. Um gehobenere und relevantere Testergebnisse in Suchergebnissen zu erhalten, musste ich sich die Inhaber der Internet Suchmaschinen an diese Umständen adaptieren. Weil der Gewinn einer Suchseiten davon abhängig ist, relevante Ergebnisse der Suchmaschine zu den inszenierten Suchbegriffen anzuzeigen, konnten ungünstige Vergleichsergebnisse darin resultieren, dass sich die Nutzer nach ähnlichen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten zur Suche im Web umblicken. Die Antwort der Suchmaschinen im Internet inventar in komplexeren Algorithmen fürs Positionierung, die Aspekte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwer beeinflussbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin konstruierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Stammvater von Die Suchmaschine – eine Search Engine, die auf einem mathematischen Suchalgorithmus basierte, der mit Hilfe der Verlinkungsstruktur Websites gewichtete und dies in Rankingalgorithmus einfließen ließ. Auch weitere Suchmaschinen im Internet bedeckt zu Beginn der Folgezeit die Verlinkungsstruktur bspw. gesund der Linkpopularität in ihre Algorithmen mit ein. Yahoo
